About Dailymotion videos
Dailymotion is a long-standing video platform with a big library of news, sport highlights, TV clips, music videos and full-length shows, especially from French, European and South Asian broadcasters. Unlike most social apps, Dailymotion videos can be long: from a one-minute clip to a two-hour programme.
Dailymotion streams in short segments that change quality with your connection. When you paste a link here, we join the segments into a single MP4 with the sound, at the highest resolution Dailymotion has, often 1080p, sometimes higher.
Which Dailymotion links work?
Paste a dailymotion.com/video/… link, or the short dai.ly/… link the Share button creates. Links to a channel or playlist don't point at one video, so open the video you want first. Embedded Dailymotion players on news sites have their own video ID; right-click the player, open the video on Dailymotion and copy that link.
How big are Dailymotion downloads?
A full-length programme at 1080p can be 1 to 3 GB. Downloading one on mobile data will use a lot of your allowance, so connect to Wi-Fi first. If you only need part of it, trim the file afterwards with Video Cutter, or pick a lower quality in the results to cut the size by half or more.
If you just want to listen, for example to a news report or a music video, MP4 to MP3 turns the downloaded file into audio without uploading it anywhere.
Why won't a Dailymotion video download?
Some Dailymotion content isn't available outside the official player:
- Private or password-protected videos.
- Videos limited to certain countries by the broadcaster.
- Live streams while they're live.
- Some premium content from partners that is protected with DRM. No legitimate downloader can save it.
Rights
Much of Dailymotion's catalogue is uploaded by broadcasters and rights holders who earn money from views. Downloading for personal offline viewing is generally tolerated, but re-uploading TV shows, sport or music videos to another platform will almost certainly lead to copyright claims.
How do I watch a downloaded video on a TV?
A downloaded MP4 plays on almost any TV: copy it to a USB stick and plug it into the TV's USB port, or play it from your phone with AirPlay or Chromecast. That's often smoother than the Dailymotion app on older smart TVs, and it works on planes, trains and anywhere else without a connection.
Very old players and car screens sometimes refuse 1080p files. If yours does, pick the 480p or 720p version in the results, or shrink the file with Resize Video.
