What is Roblox?
Roblox is a free platform with millions of games, called experiences, made by its community, from obbies and tycoons to role-play cities, horror games and simulators. Everything runs inside the Roblox app, and one account works across phones, tablets, computers, Xbox, PlayStation and Meta Quest. Roblox is free to play; Robux, its virtual currency, is used for avatar items and in-game purchases.
Installing Roblox on each device
Roblox is available almost everywhere, always from official stores:
- Android: install Roblox from Google Play, the button above. It works on most phones and tablets running a recent Android version.
- iPhone and iPad: install from the App Store.
- Windows and Mac: download the Roblox app from roblox.com/download. When you press Play on a game in your browser, Roblox also offers to install it.
- Chromebook: install the Android version from the Play Store.
- Consoles and VR: get Roblox from the Xbox Store, PlayStation Store or Meta Quest Store.
Roblox Studio for making games
Roblox Studio is the free tool for building your own experiences. It runs on Windows and Mac only, not on phones. Games are scripted in Luau, a version of the Lua programming language, and can be published to Roblox with one click. Many young developers learn programming this way, and popular creators earn real money through Roblox's Developer Exchange program.
Are free Robux generators real?
There are no legitimate free-Robux generators, apps or websites. Pages that promise free Robux are after your password or your parent's payment details, or want you to install malware. Real Robux comes only from Roblox, either bought in the app, from Roblox gift cards or through a Roblox Premium subscription.
Turn on 2-step verification in Settings → Security, and never share your password or a .ROBLOSECURITY cookie with anyone who claims they can give you items.
Settings for parents
Roblox's parental controls let parents link their own account to a child's account and manage it from there. You can set spending limits, choose which content maturity levels are allowed, limit or turn off chat, and see screen time. The settings are under Settings → Parental Controls. Roblox also sets stricter defaults automatically for younger accounts.
What can I do if Roblox won't install or launch?
Most problems come down to a few causes:
- Check free storage: Roblox and its game data can take a few gigabytes on mobile.
- On Windows, restart the computer after installing, then launch a game from roblox.com so the browser can open the app.
- Update your device's operating system: Roblox drops support for very old Android, iOS and macOS versions.
- Some school and work networks block Roblox. Try on a home connection.
Playing Roblox on a phone vs. a computer
Most Roblox experiences work on every device, but they don't always feel the same. Phones use on-screen controls, which suit simulators, tycoons and role-play. Fast obbies, shooters and competitive games are easier with a keyboard and mouse or a controller. Some developers mark their games as unsupported on certain devices, and they won't open there.
Progress, Robux and avatar items belong to your account, not the device, so you can start on a phone and continue on a computer by signing in.
Data and storage
Roblox downloads each experience's assets as you play, so the first time you join a big game can take a while and use a few hundred megabytes of data. On mobile data, turn on the lower graphics quality in the in-game settings, and play on Wi-Fi when you can. Clearing Roblox's cache in your phone's app settings frees space without logging you out.
Roblox accounts and age checks
Signing up needs a username, a password and your birthday, which Roblox uses to set chat and content defaults. Some features, such as voice chat and more mature experiences, require age verification with an ID or a face scan through Roblox's verification partner. If you forget your password, reset it with the email or phone number on the account, which is why adding one in Settings is important.
Is Roblox safe for kids?
Roblox moderates chat with filters and human reviewers, hides personal information like phone numbers in chat, and limits what younger players can see and who can contact them. No platform this large is risk-free, though. The most useful steps are setting up parental controls, keeping chat limited to friends, talking with children about never sharing personal details or moving conversations to other apps, and using Roblox's Report button for anything that feels wrong.
What is Roblox Premium?
Roblox Premium is a monthly subscription that gives you a Robux allowance each month, a bonus on Robux purchases, and the ability to trade and sell some items. It's optional: every experience can be played without it.
