Why do Instagram Stories disappear?
Stories are photos and short videos that stay on an account for 24 hours and then vanish from public view. Creators can pin them to their profile as Highlights, where they stay until removed. Download Instagram Story saves a story while it's still live, or any story inside a Highlight, as a JPG or MP4 file you keep.
Each story slide is stored as its own file. A story video is up to 60 seconds per slide; longer clips are split across slides. Photos are usually 1080 × 1920.
How do I copy an Instagram story link?
In the Instagram app, open the story, tap the three dots (or the paper-plane Share icon) and choose Copy link. For a Highlight, open it from the profile, go to the slide you want and copy the link the same way. On a computer, open the story on instagram.com and copy the address bar.
Story links include the story's ID, so a link copied from one slide points to that slide. To save several slides, copy and paste each one in turn.
Does the account see that I viewed or saved their story?
Instagram's viewer list shows the accounts that watched a story. When you use this page, your own Instagram account isn't involved at all: we never ask you to sign in. So your name doesn't appear in the viewer list, and Instagram doesn't notify anyone that a story was saved.
That privacy cuts both ways. Please don't use it to keep tabs on people who don't want you to, and remember that a story someone posted for 24 hours wasn't meant to be kept forever.
Which Instagram Stories can't be saved?
Only public stories can be downloaded. That rules out:
- Stories from private accounts, including ones you follow.
- Close Friends stories (the ones with a green ring).
- Stories that have already expired and weren't added to a Highlight.
- Interactive parts of a story, like polls, quiz answers and link stickers. You get the picture or video with the stickers as they appear, but they don't work in the saved file.
How do I save my own old Instagram Stories?
If you're trying to save your own old stories, Instagram keeps an archive for you: open your profile, tap the menu and choose Archive. You can also download a full copy of your account data from Accounts Center → Your information and permissions → Download your information. This page is fastest for one story; the archive is better for years of them.
