How do I calculate my GPA?

Short answer
To calculate the GPA, multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours, add the results, then divide by your total credit hours. Grades of A, B+, B, B− and A across 3, 4, 3, 2 and 1 credits earn 43.6 grade points over 13 credits, so the GPA is 43.6 ÷ 13 = 3.35. Courses with more credits move your GPA more.
Step by step
Step 1: Convert each grade to points
On a common 4.0 scale, A = 4.0, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0 and B− = 2.7. Check your school's table.
Step 2: Multiply by credits
A in a 3-credit class: 4.0 × 3 = 12 grade points.
Step 3: Add it all up
Add the grade points and the credit hours separately.
Step 4: Divide
Total grade points ÷ total credits = your GPA.
What does a worked GPA example look like?
- A in a 3-credit course: 4.0 × 3 = 12.0
- B+ in a 4-credit course: 3.3 × 4 = 13.2
- B in a 3-credit course: 3.0 × 3 = 9.0
- B− in a 2-credit course: 2.7 × 2 = 5.4
- A in a 1-credit course: 4.0 × 1 = 4.0
- Total: 43.6 grade points ÷ 13 credits = 3.35
Is there a faster way?
Enter your letter grades and credits in this GPA calculator. It works out the term GPA, combines it with past semesters for a cumulative figure, and has pass and no-pass grade options.
Your school's method is the one that counts. Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi's GPA page shows the standard calculation, but schools differ on plus and minus values and repeated courses.
How do I calculate my cumulative GPA?
Don't average your semester GPAs, because semesters with more credits should count for more. Multiply your earlier GPA by your earlier credits, add this term's grade points, then divide by all the credits. A 3.2 over 45 credits is 144 grade points. Add 43.6 and divide by 58 credits, and you get 3.23.
What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
Unweighted GPA uses the standard scale, with 4.0 as the top. Weighted GPA, common in high schools, gives extra points for honors or AP classes, so it can go above 4.0. Applications sometimes ask for one specifically, so check which they want.
