How the Pomodoro Technique works
The Pomodoro Technique, created by Francesco Cirillo, splits work into focused 25 minute sessions separated by 5 minute breaks. After four sessions you take a longer break of 15 to 30 minutes. Short, fixed sessions make it easier to start, protect your attention from interruptions and stop you from burning out. This timer moves between focus and breaks automatically, beeps at each change and counts the sessions you finish. You can change all three lengths under Session lengths.
How to use it
- 1
Start a focus session
Press Start and work on one task for 25 minutes. Press Space to pause if you're interrupted.
- 2
Take the break
When the alarm sounds, a 5 minute break starts by itself. Step away from the screen.
- 3
Repeat
After every fourth focus session you get a long break. Adjust the lengths to suit your work.
Frequently asked questions
Why 25 minutes?
It's long enough to make progress and short enough to stay fully focused. Many people later move to 50 minute sessions with 10 minute breaks; set whatever works for you.
What should I do during a break?
Something that rests your mind and eyes: stretch, walk, drink water or look out of a window. Avoid checking email or social media, which keeps your brain in work mode.
What if I'm interrupted?
Pause the timer, deal with it quickly or note it down for later, then resume. If the interruption takes long, reset and start a fresh session.
