Base64 Encode and Decode
Encode text to Base64 or decode Base64 to text, with full UTF-8 support for accents and emoji and a URL-safe option. Free, in your browser.
What Base64 is for
Base64 turns any data into 64 safe characters (A–Z, a–z, 0–9, + and /), so it can travel through systems that only handle text: email attachments, data: URLs, JSON fields, HTTP Basic authentication headers and JWT tokens. Encoded data is about a third larger than the original. This tool encodes text as UTF-8 first, so accented letters and emoji round-trip correctly. URL-safe Base64 swaps + and / for - and _ and drops the = padding, as used in JWTs and URLs.

Frequently asked questions
Is Base64 encryption?
No. Anyone can decode it instantly. Use it to encode data, never to hide it.
Why is my decoded text garbled?
The Base64 probably contains binary data (like an image) rather than text, or text in an encoding other than UTF-8.
What does the = at the end mean?
Padding, so the length is a multiple of 4. It can be left out, as URL-safe Base64 does.
Is anything sent to a server?
No. Encoding and decoding happen in your browser.
