Checksums for text and files
A hash function turns any input into a fixed-length fingerprint: change one character and the hash changes completely. Use it to verify a download (compare the file's SHA-256 with the checksum the publisher lists), detect changed files, or generate keys for caching. Choose File to hash a file of any type; it's read in your browser and never uploaded. Paste an expected hash into the compare box and the matching algorithm is highlighted. MD5 and SHA-1 are fine for checksums but broken for security, so use SHA-256 or stronger for anything that matters.
How to use it
- 1
Choose text or file
Type text, or pick a file from your device.
- 2
Read the hashes
All five algorithms are calculated at once.
- 3
Compare (optional)
Paste a published checksum to check it matches.
Frequently asked questions
How do I verify a downloaded file?
Choose File, pick the download, and paste the SHA-256 checksum from the publisher's site into the compare box. A green match means the file is intact.
Can a hash be reversed?
No. Hashes are one-way. Short or common inputs can be guessed by trying many possibilities, which is why passwords need slow, salted hashes like bcrypt or Argon2.
Is MD5 safe?
Not for security: collisions can be created deliberately. It's still fine for spotting accidental corruption.
Is my file uploaded?
No. Files are read and hashed in your browser with Web Crypto; nothing leaves your device.
