Trip cost and fuel economy
Trip fuel cost divides the distance by your car's fuel economy to get the fuel you'll use, then multiplies by the price per gallon or litre. A 300 mile trip in a car doing 28 mpg uses about 10.7 gallons; at $3.50 a gallon that's $37.50. Tick Round trip for there and back, and split the cost between passengers. Fuel economy mode works the other way: fill the tank, note the miles until the next fill and the fuel it takes, and get your real MPG (US and UK), L/100 km and km/L.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate MPG?
Divide the miles driven by the gallons used to refill. 320 miles on 11 gallons is 29.1 mpg.
Why are US and UK mpg different?
A UK (imperial) gallon is 4.546 litres and a US gallon is 3.785, so the same car shows about 20% higher mpg in UK figures.
How do I convert mpg to L/100 km?
235.2 ÷ mpg (US) = L/100 km. 30 mpg is 7.8 L/100 km.
