A projection with steady returns and inflation. It leaves out pensions, Social Security and taxes, so add any pension income by lowering the income you need.
How the projection works
The calculator grows your current savings and monthly contributions at your expected return until you retire. It then works out the nest egg you'll need to pay the yearly income you want, raised each year with inflation, from your retirement age until the age you plan to. If your projected savings fall short, it shows how much more to save each month. Enter the income you need from savings: if you'll get a pension or Social Security, subtract it first. A common rule of thumb is to plan for 70–80% of your pre-retirement income.

Frequently asked questions
How much do I need to retire?
Roughly 25 times the yearly income you'll take from savings, based on the '4% rule'. For 40,000 a year, that's about 1 million.
What return should I assume?
Many planners use 5–7% before retirement for a stock-heavy portfolio and 3–5% after, when investments are usually more conservative. Lower returns give a safer plan.
Does it include taxes?
No. Withdrawals from many retirement accounts are taxed, so plan for a higher gross income if yours will be.
Is anything sent to a server?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser, and nothing you type is stored or sent anywhere.
