From watts to your bill
Your bill charges for kilowatt-hours (kWh): 1 kWh is 1,000 watts used for one hour. To find an appliance's use, multiply its wattage by the hours it runs and divide by 1,000; a 1,500 W heater on for 4 hours uses 6 kWh. The calculator adds up every appliance in the list and multiplies by your price per kWh, which is on your bill. Wattage is on each appliance's label; fridges and air conditioners cycle on and off, so use the hours their compressor actually runs, often a third of the day for a fridge.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate kWh?
Watts × hours ÷ 1,000. A 100 W TV for 5 hours uses 0.5 kWh.
What uses the most electricity at home?
Usually heating and cooling, water heating, then large appliances such as dryers, ovens and fridges.
What is standby power?
Many devices draw a few watts when off. 10 W around the clock is about 7 kWh a month.
Is anything sent to a server?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser, and nothing you type is stored or sent anywhere.
