Roots, radicals and powers
Enter a number to see its square root, cube root and nth root, together with its square, cube and nth power. For whole numbers the calculator also simplifies the radical by taking out the largest perfect square: √72 = √(36 × 2) = 6√2, which is the form most maths classes ask for. Square roots of negative numbers are shown as imaginary numbers (√−9 = 3i), while odd roots of negatives are real: ∛−8 = −2.

Frequently asked questions
How do I simplify a square root?
Find the largest perfect square that divides the number. For √50: 50 = 25 × 2, so √50 = 5√2.
What is the square root of 2?
About 1.41421356. It's irrational, so its decimals never end or repeat.
Can a square root be negative?
Every positive number has two square roots, such as 3 and −3 for 9. The √ symbol means the positive one.
