Rise over run
The slope of a line measures how steep it is: the change in y divided by the change in x between two points, m = (y₂ − y₁) / (x₂ − x₁). A positive slope rises from left to right, a negative one falls, zero is horizontal and a vertical line has an undefined slope. Enter two points to get the slope, the line's equation in slope-intercept form (y = mx + b) and point-slope form, its angle with the x-axis and the distance between the points.
How to use it
- 1
Enter the first point
Its x and y coordinates.
- 2
Enter the second point
Any other point on the line.
- 3
Read the slope and equation
Plus the angle and the distance between the points.
Frequently asked questions
What's the slope formula?
m = (y₂ − y₁) / (x₂ − x₁). For (1, 2) and (4, 8): (8 − 2) / (4 − 1) = 2.
How do I find the y-intercept?
b = y₁ − m × x₁. With m = 2 and the point (1, 2): b = 2 − 2 = 0, so y = 2x.
How do I turn slope into a percentage grade?
Multiply by 100. A slope of 0.08 is an 8% grade, common for road and ramp gradients.
