Speech to Text

Turn your voice into text in your browser: dictate in 18 languages, see words appear as you speak, edit the transcript and download it. Free, no sign-up.

Speech recognition is provided by your browser. Chrome and Edge send the audio to Google or Microsoft to transcribe it; Safari may process it on your device.

Type with your voice

Press Start listening, allow the microphone, and speak: your words appear as you talk and are added to the transcript when each phrase is finished. You can edit the text at any time, then copy it or download it as a .txt file. It's handy for drafting emails and essays, taking notes hands-free, and for anyone who finds typing slow or painful. Recognition is provided by your browser: Chrome and Edge send the audio to Google or Microsoft to transcribe, so don't dictate anything you wouldn't want processed by them.

Frequently asked questions

Which browsers support speech to text?

Chrome, Edge and Safari on desktop and mobile. Firefox doesn't support the Web Speech API yet.

How do I add punctuation?

Some languages accept spoken punctuation like 'comma' and 'full stop', depending on the browser. Otherwise, add it when you edit the transcript.

Is my voice recorded or stored?

This site doesn't record or store anything. Your browser's speech service (Google for Chrome, Microsoft for Edge) processes the audio to transcribe it.

Why does it stop listening?

Browsers stop after a pause in speech. Press Start listening again to continue; the transcript is kept.
