Lean body mass explained
Lean body mass is your weight minus your body fat: muscle, bone, organs and water. It's used for drug dosing, protein targets and tracking fitness. The Boer formula is the most widely used: for a 70 kg, 170 cm woman it gives 49.8 kg. If you know your body fat percentage from a scale or calipers, enter it for a direct figure: 70 kg at 25% fat is 52.5 kg lean. The fat-free mass index (FFMI) adjusts lean mass for height, like BMI does for weight.
