- Remainder
- 1
- Decimal (repeating digits in brackets)
- 1244.1(6)
- Check
- 6 × 1244 + 1 = 7465
- 1.7 ÷ 6 = 1, {q} × {d} = 6, {n} − {p} = 1
- 2.14 ÷ 6 = 2, {q} × {d} = 12, {n} − {p} = 2
- 3.26 ÷ 6 = 4, {q} × {d} = 24, {n} − {p} = 2
- 4.25 ÷ 6 = 4, {q} × {d} = 24, {n} − {p} = 1
Long division, one step at a time
Long division breaks a big division into small ones. Working left to right, you divide the current part of the dividend by the divisor, write the digit, multiply back, subtract and bring down the next digit. The calculator shows each of those steps, the final quotient and remainder, and the exact decimal, putting any repeating block in brackets: 1 ÷ 7 = 0.(142857). Use it to check homework or to follow how the method works.
How to use it
- 1
Enter the dividend
The number being divided.
- 2
Enter the divisor
The number you divide by.
- 3
Follow the steps
See each divide, multiply, subtract and bring down.
Frequently asked questions
What do quotient and remainder mean?
The quotient is how many whole times the divisor fits; the remainder is what's left. 17 ÷ 5 = 3 remainder 2.
How do I check a division?
Multiply the quotient by the divisor and add the remainder. You should get the dividend back.
Why do some decimals repeat?
If the divisor has prime factors other than 2 and 5, the decimal never ends and eventually repeats, like 1/3 = 0.333…
