Mean, median and mode explained
The mean is what most people call the average: add up the numbers and divide by how many there are. The median is the middle value once the numbers are sorted, which isn't pulled up or down by one extreme value, so it's often a better 'typical' figure for prices and salaries. The mode is the value that appears most often. The calculator also shows the range, the sum, the smallest and largest values and the standard deviation, which tells you how spread out the numbers are.
How to use it
- 1
Enter your numbers
Type or paste them, separated by commas, spaces or new lines.
- 2
Check the count
Make sure the count matches the number of values you meant to enter.
- 3
Read the results
The mean, median, mode and the other statistics update as you type.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate an average?
Add all the numbers and divide by how many there are. The average of 4, 8 and 12 is 24 ÷ 3 = 8.
What's the median of an even number of values?
The average of the two middle values. For 3, 5, 7, 9 it's (5 + 7) ÷ 2 = 6.
Which standard deviation should I use?
Use the sample standard deviation when your numbers are a sample from a bigger group, and the population one when they're the whole group.
Is anything sent to a server?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser, and nothing you type is stored or sent anywhere.
