Mutual fund returns aren't guaranteed: this assumes the same return every year, which real markets never deliver.

How SIP returns add up

A systematic investment plan (SIP) invests a fixed amount in a mutual fund every month. Each instalment grows for the time it stays invested, so early instalments compound the longest. The calculator assumes each SIP is invested at the start of the month and grows at the expected yearly return, compounded monthly: the same method most fund house calculators use. Add a yearly step-up to raise your SIP as your income grows, or switch to Lump sum for a one-time investment. Real returns vary from year to year; equity funds can fall in some years.

Frequently asked questions

What return should I assume?

It depends on the fund. Long-term Indian equity fund averages have been around 10–12% a year, debt funds 6–8%, but past returns don't guarantee future ones. Try a lower rate to see a cautious case.

What is a step-up SIP?

A SIP that increases by a fixed percentage every year, such as 10%. Even small step-ups make a big difference over 15–20 years.

SIP or lumpsum: which is better?

A lumpsum earns more if markets rise steadily, because all the money is invested from day one. A SIP spreads your entry price over time (rupee cost averaging) and suits regular income.
