APY, rate and what you'll earn
US banks quote CDs by their annual percentage yield (APY), which already includes compounding. That makes the maths simple: a 10,000 CD at 4.50% APY for one year is worth 10,450 at maturity. For other terms, the balance grows by the APY for each year, including part years. If you only know the interest rate (APR), untick the APY box and choose how often the bank compounds, usually daily or monthly. CDs are FDIC-insured up to 250,000 per depositor, per bank.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between APY and APR?
APR is the yearly interest rate before compounding; APY includes compounding. 4.40% compounded daily is about a 4.50% APY.
What happens if I withdraw early?
Most CDs charge an early withdrawal penalty, often several months of interest. No-penalty CDs exist but usually pay less.
Is CD interest taxable?
Yes, as ordinary income in the year it's credited, even if you don't withdraw it. The bank sends a 1099-INT.
Is anything sent to a server?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser, and nothing you type is stored or sent anywhere.
