Adding and removing VAT
To add VAT, multiply the net price by (1 + rate): 100 plus 20% VAT is 120. To remove VAT from a price that already includes it, divide by (1 + rate), not multiply by the rate: 120 including 20% VAT is 100 before VAT, so the VAT is 20, not 24. The UK standard rate is 20%, with a 5% reduced rate on things like home energy and children's car seats. EU countries set their own rates, mostly between 17% and 27%.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate VAT backwards?
Divide the gross amount by 1.2 for 20% VAT. £240 ÷ 1.2 = £200 net, so the VAT is £40. For 5%, divide by 1.05.
What is the VAT fraction?
The share of a VAT-inclusive price that is VAT: 1/6 at 20% and 1/21 at 5%.
What are the UK VAT rates?
Standard 20%, reduced 5% (for example home energy) and zero 0% (most food and children's clothes).
