The smooth growth rate behind a change
CAGR is the steady yearly growth rate that would take a value from its starting point to its ending point over a number of years. It smooths out ups and downs, which makes it the standard way to compare investments, company revenue or market sizes over different periods. CAGR = (ending value ÷ starting value)^(1 ÷ years) − 1. An investment that grows from 10,000 to 25,000 in 5 years has a CAGR of 20.1%, even though its total return is 150%.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between CAGR and average return?
A simple average of yearly returns ignores compounding. +50% then −50% averages 0%, but you'd actually be down 25%, which CAGR shows correctly (−13.4% a year).
What is a good CAGR?
It depends on the asset and risk. Broad stock market indexes have historically delivered roughly 7–10% a year over long periods.
Can I use CAGR for less than a year?
You can enter fractions of a year, like 0.5, but CAGR over short periods exaggerates swings and isn't very meaningful.
