Margin vs markup
Margin and markup describe the same profit from two sides. Margin is profit as a share of the selling price; markup is profit as a share of the cost. A product that costs 60 and sells for 100 has a 40% margin but a 66.7% markup. Mixing them up is a common pricing mistake: adding a 40% markup to a cost of 60 gives a price of 84, which is only a 28.6% margin. Use the tabs to work out margin from a price, or to set a price that hits a target margin or markup.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate profit margin?
Margin = (price − cost) ÷ price × 100. For a cost of 60 and price of 100: 40 ÷ 100 = 40%.
How do I price for a 30% margin?
Divide the cost by (1 − 0.30). A cost of 70 needs a price of 100.
Can markup be over 100%?
Yes. A 100% markup doubles the cost. Margin, though, can never reach 100%, because that would mean the cost was zero.
