How FD interest is calculated

Most banks in India compound cumulative fixed deposit interest every quarter, so the maturity amount is A = P × (1 + r/4)^(4 × t), where P is the deposit, r the yearly rate and t the tenure in years. A ₹1 lakh FD at 7% for 5 years matures at about ₹1.41 lakh. You can change the compounding frequency for deposits that pay monthly or yearly. The effective annual yield is shown too, which is slightly higher than the quoted rate because of compounding.

Frequently asked questions

Is FD interest taxable?

Yes. It's added to your income and taxed at your slab rate. Banks deduct TDS when the interest crosses the yearly threshold, unless you submit Form 15G or 15H if eligible.

Do senior citizens get higher FD rates?

Most banks pay senior citizens 0.25–0.50% more. Enter that higher rate to see the difference.

What's the difference between cumulative and non-cumulative FDs?

Cumulative FDs reinvest the interest and pay it all at maturity, which is what this calculator shows. Non-cumulative FDs pay interest out monthly or quarterly, so there's no compounding.

Is anything sent to a server?
