Rounding rules

Rounding shortens a number to a chosen place. The usual school rule rounds a 5 up: 1234.5678 to two decimals is 1234.57, and 2.5 to a whole number is 3. Banker's rounding (half to even) rounds a 5 to the nearest even digit, so 2.5 becomes 2 and 3.5 becomes 4; it avoids bias in large sums. Ceiling always rounds up, floor always rounds down and truncating just cuts the extra digits off.

Frequently asked questions

How do I round to two decimal places?

Look at the third decimal: if it's 5 or more, add 1 to the second decimal; then drop the rest. 3.14159 → 3.14.

What is banker's rounding?

Round half to even: an exact 5 rounds to the nearest even digit. 0.125 to two decimals is 0.12.

Why does 1.005 round wrong in some apps?

Computers store 1.005 as 1.00499999…. This calculator corrects for that, so 1.005 rounds to 1.01.

Is anything stored?

No. The calculation runs in your browser.
