The six trig functions

Trigonometric functions relate an angle of a right triangle to the ratios of its sides: sine is opposite ÷ hypotenuse, cosine is adjacent ÷ hypotenuse and tangent is opposite ÷ adjacent. Their reciprocals are cosecant, secant and cotangent. sin 30° = 0.5, cos 60° = 0.5 and tan 45° = 1. The inverse tab works backwards from a ratio to the angle: arcsin(0.5) = 30°. Tangent and secant are undefined at 90°, where cosine is zero.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Pick a calculation

Functions of an angle, or inverse functions of a value.

  2. 2

    Enter the angle or value

    Angles in degrees or radians.

  3. 3

    Read the results

All six functions, or the angle in degrees and radians.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert degrees to radians?

Multiply by π ÷ 180. 180° is π radians.

Why is tan 90° undefined?

tan = sin ÷ cos, and cos 90° = 0, so it would mean dividing by zero.

What range do inverse functions return?

arcsin: −90° to 90°; arccos: 0° to 180°; arctan: −90° to 90°.

Is anything stored?

No. The calculation runs in your browser.
