How to work out a percentage increase

A percentage increase compares how much a value grew with where it started: (new − old) ÷ old × 100. A price that rises from 50 to 65 has gone up by 30%. If the result is negative, it's a percentage decrease: 80 to 60 is −25%. Percentage changes aren't symmetric: a 25% drop needs a 33.3% rise to get back where you started. Use it for prices, salaries, rent, population or test scores.
