Spreading an asset's cost over its life

Depreciation spreads the cost of an asset, less what it's worth at the end (salvage value), over its useful life. Straight-line depreciation charges the same each year: a $20,000 machine with a $2,000 salvage value over 5 years depreciates $3,600 a year. Declining-balance methods charge more in the early years, which matches how vehicles and computers lose value. The schedule shows the depreciation, the total so far and the book value for every year.

Frequently asked questions

What is the straight-line formula?

(Cost − salvage value) ÷ useful life.

How does double declining balance work?

Each year's depreciation is 2 ÷ life × the book value at the start of the year. This tool switches to straight line once that gives more, so the asset ends exactly at salvage value.

Which method is used for taxes?

It depends on your country. US tax uses MACRS tables, which are based on declining-balance methods.

Is anything stored?
