When some values count more

A weighted average gives each value an importance, its weight. Multiply each value by its weight, add them up, and divide by the total weight. With exam scores of 90 (20%), 78 (30%) and 85 (50%), the weighted average is (90 × 20 + 78 × 30 + 85 × 50) ÷ 100 = 83.9, lower than the plain average of 84.3 because the 78 counts more. Weights don't need to add to 100; the calculator divides by whatever they total.
