What money today is worth later

Future value is what a sum grows to after earning compound interest, plus any regular payments you add. FV = PV × (1 + i)^n + PMT × ((1 + i)^n − 1) ÷ i, where i is the rate per period and n the number of periods. $10,000 plus $100 a month at 6% compounded monthly becomes $34,581.90 in 10 years: $18,194 from the starting sum and $16,388 from the payments. Payments at the start of each period (an annuity due) earn one extra period of interest.

Frequently asked questions

What is the future value formula?

FV = PV(1 + i)^n for a lump sum. For regular payments add PMT × ((1 + i)^n − 1) ÷ i, times (1 + i) if paid at the start of each period.

What does compounding frequency change?

More frequent compounding gives slightly more interest: 6% compounded monthly is an effective 6.17% a year.

Can I use it for inflation?

Yes. Enter the inflation rate to see what a price today will cost in the future.

Is anything sent to a server?
