Markup: profit as a share of cost

Markup is how much you add on top of what something costs you, as a percentage of that cost. A product that costs $60 with a 50% markup sells for $90. Markup is not the same as margin: that $90 price gives a 33.3% margin, because margin is profit divided by the price. Retailers often quote markup, while accountants and investors look at margin. The calculator shows both so you can price with either number.
