How a 401(k) grows

A 401(k) grows from your own contributions, your employer's match and investment returns, all tax-deferred until you withdraw. A 30-year-old earning $70,000 who saves 6% with a 50% match up to 6% of salary, gets 3% raises and earns 7% could have about $1.55 million at 65, or about $650,000 in today's dollars. The calculator caps your contributions at the 2026 IRS limit of $24,500, plus $8,000 catch-up from age 50 and $11,250 at ages 60–63.
