Regular income from your investments

A systematic withdrawal plan takes a fixed amount out of a mutual fund every month while the rest stays invested. If the fund earns more than you withdraw, the balance keeps growing; if not, it slowly runs down. ₹10 lakh invested at 8% with ₹8,000 withdrawn monthly still leaves about ₹7.56 lakh after 10 years, having paid out ₹9.6 lakh. Withdraw ₹10,000 a month from ₹5 lakh and only about ₹10,000 is left after 5 years.

Frequently asked questions

How is SWP calculated?

Each month the balance grows by the monthly return (yearly ÷ 12) and the withdrawal is taken out. Final value = P(1 + i)^n − W × ((1 + i)^n − 1) ÷ i.

What is a safe withdrawal rate?

Withdrawing less than the fund's expected return keeps the capital intact. 4–6% a year is a common range for long retirements.

Is SWP taxed?

Each withdrawal is part capital and part gains; only the gains are taxed, as short- or long-term capital gains depending on how long the units were held.
