How a PPF account grows

The Public Provident Fund is a 15-year government savings scheme with tax-free returns. You can deposit ₹500 to ₹1.5 lakh a year, and interest compounds yearly at the rate set each quarter (7.1% recently). Depositing ₹1.5 lakh every year for 15 years gives ₹40.68 lakh at maturity: ₹22.5 lakh invested and ₹18.18 lakh of interest. After 15 years you can extend in blocks of 5 years, with or without new deposits. Deposit before the 5th of the month to earn interest for that month.
