How much is enough?

Your FIRE number is the investment balance whose safe yearly withdrawal covers your spending. With the common 4% rule, that's 25 times your yearly expenses: spending $40,000 a year means a FIRE number of $1 million. The calculator adds your yearly savings and growth (use a return after inflation) to see when you'll get there. Saving $25,000 a year on top of $50,000 at 5% gets you there in 21 years. Coast FIRE is the amount that would grow to your number by 65 with no more saving.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 4% rule?

Withdrawing 4% of a balanced portfolio in the first year, then adjusting for inflation, has historically lasted 30 years in most US markets.

Should I use a lower withdrawal rate?

For early retirement lasting 40–50 years, many people plan with 3–3.5%.

Why use a return after inflation?

Your spending is in today's dollars, so a real return keeps everything in today's money.

Is my data stored?
